Die Nominierungen für den Emmy Award 2023 sind da und viele Preisbeobachter fragen sich: Wer wird dieses Jahr EGOT sein? Der EGOT ist ein Akronym für Emmy, Grammy, Oscar und Tony und ist Hollywoods Grand-Slam-Auszeichnung, und nur eine Handvoll Berühmtheiten (wie Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks und Jennifer Hudson) haben es auf die Liste geschafft. Während der Preisverleihungssaison 2022–2023 schloss sich eine weitere Ikone der sagenumwobenen Gruppe an: Viola Davis, die die Grammys 2023 für ihre Erzählung des Hörbuchs ihrer Memoiren „Finding Me“ gewann.
Der Begriff EGOT wurde von Philip Michael Thomas erfunden, einem Schauspieler, der durch seine Rolle in „Miami Vice“ berühmt wurde prägte den Begriff im Jahr 1984, der jedoch nie einen der Preise gewann. Der erste Mensch, der jemals wirklich den EGOT-Status erreichte, war Richard Rodgers, der den Titel 1962 erhielt, nachdem er einen Emmy für die Originalmusik zu „Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years“ gewonnen hatte. Die einzige Person, die bisher zweimal EGOT bekam, ist der Songwriter Robert Lopez, der 2018 Geschichte schrieb, als er bei den Oscars für den Song „Remember Me“ von „Coco“ gewann, was bedeutet, dass er jeden Preis mindestens zweimal gewann. Seine Frau und kreative Partnerin Kristen Anderson-Lopez hat viele dieser Ehrungen mit ihm geteilt, aber sie ist immer noch einen Tony von ihrem eigenen Egoismus entfernt.
